Looks like this forum will became soon the new Lampedusa island, for the PowerBASIC refugies.
But they will probably have a hard time to get their visa to the promise land.  :(

Patrice, what do you mean by that?

At the top of every page here we have: Your resource for programming with PowerBASIC™

Is that no longer true?

Could be understood from several ways   :)

And one of them is that, easy registration to this site is not allowed anymore, to stay away from bot spammers and trolls.

Yes but anybody can register by sending a mail to Jose, that contains his complete address data.
This way we are sure to have only valid people in the forum.

PS: Powerbasic is up by now.

The spammers and the hackers managed to bypass the captcha system and I had tons of hundreds of fake registrations every day. I also had a serious DOS attack, and the only way to stop that mess was to disable self-registration.

I had the same problem, and now i am using
Admin -> Members -> Awaiting Approval (#)
if they are using a pseudo instead of a real name that's easy.
Most of the time i always use the global check box, then uncheck the legitimate, then select Reject to get rid of the hacker/spammers, then i Approve the others, et voilà :)

Yes, this is also what could be found, now, here ;)

Surely you don't have had a DoS attack. The purpose is not to register and post spam, but to make te forum unavailable.

The forum i am moderating, is protected from DoS attack by the ISP that is also the real owner of the forum. :)

For the SQLitening forum, I got a honeypot key from www.projecthoneypot.org and then installed the MOD httpBL mod. 40,000 spammers have been rejected so far  :)

Patrice,
Reading your comment ...

made me have to look up Lampedusa. It's not an island we talk about much in the USA.

From Wikipedia, it says that Lampedus is ...
Quote...primary European entry point for migrants
That certainly lets me understand your opening comment.

But, the end game has yet to played out.  For now, I'd certainly say Jose's forum is an alternate port in a storm. We've yet to see if it's turns into the home port.

Regardless, I have no doubt that Jose's site will remain an available port for some time.  I certainly hope to do my part to help that happen.

Being relative new on the block, it certainly does seem that the pre-Beene era has resulted in some severe entrenchment.

Could be that's because they've found their paradigm has worked very well for them. That the newer folks haven't wholesale embraced the SDK paradigm is obviously a point of concern.  The thing I don't want to happen is for the previous generation of PowerBASIC programmers to disengage from the new.  The newer folks have everything to gain by keeping the communication open with the seasoned folks who have much to share (and the desire to share, I believe!).

Well, that's part of the discussion that I hope to have in the DDT vs SDK thread.

James Klutho

I think DDT is a great place to learn the SDK. The Windows API is overwhelming for most newbies and books getting harder to find with time on the subject. DDT allows one to ease into the complicated subject with all the messages, styles, etc being the same. Many utility type apps that require only a modest GUI, DDT is fine.  DDT will only take you so far though, and then if finer grain control is needed, DDT will have to be put on the back burner.
